animations suspended in air

I'm trying to set up an animation show, however, there's something I really don't understand.

If you want to project your animations mid-air, how would you go about this?
I'm thinking you need a mesh or something that lets most of the laser light through.

with a scrim... most people use mosquito netting or similar
