Haaa. I do have to admit, there is a lure to laser-cutting my grass.
Update: Goldenstar rocks. Just got DHL delivery notification for tomorrow. They shipped me a new RGB module without requiring me to send mine back first. If everything is correct (crosses fingers), this is pretty good service. They even paid to ship it to me (although I will be responsible for the return shipping).
Update: Got the new RGB module, put it in... amazingly, everything aligned. Turn it on, Red won't modulate.... always on. Pulled the driver board off the old module with the bad Red diode, put it on the new module and everything works. For now. *fingers crossed that it wasn't a driver issue that fried the last red diode*
Not a bad little first projector for $360 shipped plus a little hassle and some frankenstein-ing of parts. The 638 red looks way better in person than on camera, but damn that beam is enormous. Even just 35 or so feet away, you can clearly see red halos around the main color.
on the red they are clearly using 2 diodes with a knife edge to combine the beams because on my unit the red beam profile is a large block (with the focus at its best) Im sure it is 500-600mw but you lose half that power anyway so you are better off replacing with a single 300mw laser
I think John's concern was more about obtaining an FAA letter of non-objection, since it was an outdoor show, rather than your Class A license (which you would need for ANY show in New York).
Nevertheless, it's a moot point by now, since he asked you about it 6 months ago...
