Physics class. Our teacher had us transmit sound by literally hooking up an audio source to a 5mw red laser diode and shining it on a solar cell. A couple years before that I bought one of those when it was $35 for one of those suckers, but the physics class is what caught me.

It is the issue with a hologram of the bold eagle on the cover.
The article is titled:Lasers, a splendid light for man's use. I must say that at the age of 10 I was more captured by the pictures than the text but I got the bug right there!

I remember that article. That was the year I graduated high school. Great cover pic! (And a nice article describing how they made it...)
