Yeah, it's a pretty annoying program to work with at first, which is why I gave up. But since then I've been forced to work with programs that are much more annoying (though their interface isn't in rainbow colours!), and I understand a lot more about how laser displaying works, so maybe I should give it a shot again. Just to see what it is capable of.

But you won't see me using LB for a show anytime soon. I like adjusting my effects in real time.

    Give it a real chance!

Probably the most impressive thing you can do in just a few steps is make some nice animations.

Open LaserBoy and pick a nice frame, like the five colored stars. Use the left and right arrows to go through the frames.

Once you get to a frame you like, you can use it as the initial frame to make an animation.

With that frame showing in the display, from the main menu, hit o to output a file, 1 for type ild, 4 to generate a frame effect. Type spin [enter] to select the spin effect. This will make a new file called spin.ild in the ../LaserBoy/ild folder. Open that in LaserBoy and see what you got! Hit i to input a file, 1 for type ild, type spin [enter] and choose 1 to replace the whole currently loaded frame set with the contents of the file spin.ild.

You can select individual frames with the space bar and you can select consecutive frames starting with the ( and ending with the ). If you hit o to output and choose 1 for type ild, then you can choose 5 to generate a frame set effect. Some of them require selected frames. Some of them work on the whole frame set.

Many of the frames that come with LaserBoy in the file in.ild are there specifically to demonstrate the frame and frame set effects!

They all make files of the same name as the effect in the .../LaserBoy/ild folder.

You just might find that you like some of these effects and you do use them in some of your shows!

All software has a learning curve usually proportional to its capabilities and unique features. Pointing with a mouse is in no way easier than tapping a key.
