Graph an efficiency-plot of your diode of choice.
    Such as this one.

Stick to the top of the curve for happy long lasing ever after.

I'd never try it more than 500mA.My DIY LPM did read 288mW with the red 3 layer collimation lens.
So can i push up to 8-900mA?
Do you have the P73 diode in your stock, i need two of them soon.

Sure. I think planters runs them @ 1A in his projectors with aggressive TEC and the biggest reason I think they are rated where they are from the manufacturer is for wavelength as they probably have to rate them with passive cooling. These are very sensitive to heat as far as their wavelength goes. Of course this is an individual decision but I feel pretty comfortable that you are not sacrificing life @ 900mA just the low wavelength if you don't get fairly aggressive with the cooling.

Yes I have plenty of both P73's and G71's in stock.

Here is a G71 from my original testing that I ran for a while with 1.5A. I have seen them take 1.9A without blowing but these of course are not currents that are suggested but just shows how tough they are. You can see the more the diode warms the darker red the output gets and the biggest shift is in the first 5-10 seconds.

    Tony

    Yes 850mA each.

    Bart

Is a good tip to make a chart and choose accordingly.

    DTR

But for now, I'm gone to do what DTR and Beam said and no push it more than 900mA ATM

    Andy

    Sorry about my English Andy
I meant to push it harder than the datasheet info.
But 40 Amps? First I need the juice for that
And I'm dreaming for an application for that, my higher application was an Argon X60
