Or plastic. That's what I used. Acrylic works well for base support. Powdery swarf that won't get in the way. Any sheet of scrap plastic like perspex or polycarb will work. Most times I've ever asked questions like this the cost centred on setting up tools, numbers and types of holes. Stuff like what got used as a disposable backing to protect the table never entered into it, that's just stuff the machinist solves on a daily basis whatever the job.
providing I don't have to cut the material to size, setting up will take 5mins. coding probably 30mins.
get something under the material so I don't machine my table, days, as I have nothing so would need to order something in. it is very easy to solve if you have something and I don't
