Dont get me wrong i would love a reversing tapping chuck for my mill, its just every time i see one they want 500$+ and i dont have that kinda money.
I kinda run on low budgets, all my machines have been bought second hand for 500$ for an entire mill if i bought a 500$ tool

Heck my cnc mill the x1 mill was bought at for only 100$
I wonder if there are plans for a diy tapping head.
I would love to make one.

Hmm they seem to be alot cheaper now sub 100$ for some.

You should be able to find some cheaper ones. Honestly, if you're paying $20-50USD for a tap, and you can save yourself 30-90 seconds per hole, then you'll be saving money over the long run anyway.

I'll ask around and see if any of my peers have a suggestion for a good chuck <$100.
    Neat!

please do, now i just got to remake my 5 gallon tumblers belt.
Soo off to sew some duck cloth and ductape along with some steel cable to make me a ghetto belt!
they last only for about 3 months but cost nothing to make.

not psoted in here for a while!

I took a leaf out of briggs book and got myself a thread mill, with a bit of coding help from briggs here are the results.

although tapping with my tapping head take seconds its not designed for m9 sized holes and it doesn't like doing them. it only goes up to m7, it just cost me £150 to get it repaired.

    Hi Andy,
I bought a new 30x Tapmatic. I went for it as I will be mostly be doing M3-M6. I haven't got to use it yet. Will have a go on next couple of days. When I was looking for second hand ones, I noticed a lot of broken ones for sale for parts.
I thought I'd buy a new one incase I bought a second hand one that might be on its last legs. Wince, cough, it hurt. At least it is a good investment for the future.

What broke? Was it the clutch disks?

Apart from not using oversized taps, have you got any tips for avoiding damaging it?

mine was second hand and 30 years old.

the bearing had gone and a few springs etc...

the tapping head is very strong, but just take your time and make sure you get the coding perfect. mine can run at 3000rpm but I run it at like 800rpm. even at that slow speed it can still tap holes in seconds
