Disney have splashed a few quid on lasers

This, unfortunately is the future of laser entertainment. Sharpy/5R beam heads and new advances will replace laser beams for their full color, brightness and ability to scan the audience. Full-wall projection eliminates the need to have a laser company outline a 'fork' when you already have one, including the candle and other non-vector imagery to adequately impress your audience. Sad but true from a professional laser business owner's perspective.... unless we roll with the new tech, just enjoy the show!

I agree with this to some degree, but I don't see coherent light being displaced completely by 3D mapped projections, sharpies or anything else. There are many effects where lasers are the best instrument for the job and the recent drop in associated component prices make them more attractive than ever.

As demonstrated by the talented imagineers at Disney, choosing the best technologies available makes for an entertaining show that will continue to be appreciated even after projection mapping and sharpies are commonly used and recognized by most audience members. Few people are patient enough to watch a particular effect for longer than they would want to listen to a guitar solo. This show recognizes this limitation and keeps things looking fresh for 20+ minutes. (My favorite part was the balanced pyro techniques and projections of similar effects - simply brilliant!)

There is a big backlash in the pro world about diode arrays. Having to retune many of the diode mounts after shipping is not popular. So OPSL is highly desired.

Coulda really done with a bit more haze around, but I suppose it was pretty windy during that show. The lasers kinda get washed out by everything else. Friggin brilliant show though, I can't even imagine the hours that'd go into designing something like that. It'd be a full time job pretty much, just making shows for Disney.

Hey guys, what I was trying to say is that sharpys and the lot are unregulated by the CDRH and FAA. We performed over 250 shows near the San Jose airport, and when I told them that I would be randomly shooting a dozen focused beams at over 230W each, but non-laser, they weren't concerned in the least, except for the fact that they asked us to continue performing a safe show with our two 40-watt YAGs and not deliberately aiming the sharpys toward the landing planes. Doing outdoor shows is so much easier when your aerial beams are low and you can make your audience happy with "fake laser" beams as well. I also agree highly with the fact that these new forms of light can easily be as dangerous as a laser. When programming one head in my living room, I burned a 4" hole into the couch after only a few seconds of leaving the beam in one place. I assume at some point the government will get involved with these forms of light as they are everywhere, in every television show, movie, concert and commercial. They need to regulate and justify their existence.... why not a focused beam of light, right?
