I've never had any success using a FB3 with USB over network, the timing is just too slow. Pretty much the only reliable solutions so far are remote desktop, or just using extension cables. I build a DB_25 to Cat5 adapter and just run a big length of cat 5. It carries the analog signals so I don't have to worry about special USB extenders or timing, only difference is you need a signal amplifier if you go over 50 metres or so.

I've been using it for shows for the last month or so with excellent results. Have only tested it with up to 3 fb3's, but no difference in pps when extended 100 meters vs connected directly. The specs suggest it supports 14 usb devices with the use of usb hubs, though I'm sure bandwidth would be an issue at some point, it appears as if it would be great with 4 fb3's as was tested with the startech or possibly even a few more.

Interestingly they also have usb over fiber extenders for cable runs up to 10 KM
You are correct, Icron is the original manufacturer of those devices (and actually are the patent holders on some of the IP). We like the Icron products and their support. As an FYI, they just released a USB over Ethernet solution (requires Layer 2 routing in the Ethernet switches). We have not tried it with the FB3 and BEYOND yet though.

I have tried a USB extender without success. It was USB 1.1 extender limited to 12Mbps, basically a modem pair. I found a USB 2.0 extender but was not keen to blow more dosh to find out if it worked.

We've been using the Icron 2204 with 4 x FB3's @ 50m with success. We have seen Beyond lose the USB when messing with settings, zones etc a few times.. Uplug and replug required to reset. Fine in show mode.

zero problems with my icron 2204 (oem manufacturer of the startech, hardware appears to be the same but unsure of the firmware), but either of those work well. Have run as many as 6 fb3's via usb hub over a single cat6 solid without issue. I've had no problems with settings, zones, etc as mentioned above, just works as if it was connected locally. 100%

Just wanted to add, they also have usb over fiber options for those needing longer cable runs than copper can supply

Good to know you can do 6. Is that with a powered hub at stage end for #5 & #6?

Yes, with a powered hub, didn't want to risk trying it with a passive hub, though I don't think the fb3's take all that much current.. Even did 6 + a enntec dmx pro once Not sure where it will run out of bandwidth but so far so good with that.

In case anyone fancies a cheap(er) go at this, I have a few of the Startech 4 port extenders for sale, please see the listing...

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

I was surfing the internet to see if there is maybe a new/better solution for the USB extension "problem". But I was wondering if there's a (affordable) way to use a extender over IP or something. So you can run 1 cat 5 or 6 cable from FOH to stage into the switch and patch into your usb extender and/or qm's.

I bought a QM.net at first. If I want to add more DAC's to control multiple projectors I have the choice to buy a second QM.net oem or a FB3 with a startech usb extender. The difference in price is almost none if I want to add 1 interface. With multiple DAC's FB3 is more the way to go. Only thing that is bothering me is that I have 2 systems running and I would like to eliminate that.

FB3 with an ethernet port would be the best of all. But for my understanding Pangolin has put the development of that on a hold because they are now busy with the scanners.
