Looks like the I'll be packing up my holograms and lasers and moving to Phoenix! Thinking about the Tempe area. Comments about, and experiences with the area would really be appreciated.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.
All the better to have a PHNXLEM
Kinda bleak place from a city boy's perspective. Not much industry there either. You sure?
No offense to Karl, Chris, and others I know there. Lots of cool laser folk though.
Some of them who would appreciate your tech skills.

Sweet, I another wonderful person in PHX. Swami, Spitz, laserwizardry, etc will make you feel welcome. Besides that you are only 5ish hours from the ocean. I would suggest you take up a liking to telescopes, fossils, rocks and minerals as they are there. You have a very nice community there and I like to visit.

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.
Bob, I lived in Tucson (about 2 hours away from Phoenix East on I10) for about 5 years. I love the desert southwest. It still has a tiny flavor of the wildwest (for example, if you go out to eat at a restaurant they check to see if your are carrying firearms and if you're not, they GIVE you some!). Anyway, I know Tucson much better than Phoenix but some of the things I loved was hiking in the mountains, visiting the Desert Museum (well worth a trip from Phoenix BTW), and of course the Tucson Gem and Mineral show which occurs during the first two weeks of February every year and is the largest in the world (picture quartz crystals taller than you are and acres and acres of rocks, minerals, gems, fossils, crystals.... etc. Summers can be tough (read: you can fry an egg on the sidewalk) but that's what airconditioning is for. The other 9 months of the year are wonderful. Just my brief 2 cents worth. Finally, all that sand should make for a nice stable optical bench for your holograms.

P.S. When are you moving and how in he** are you going to move your entire laser collection?

i go to the tucson gem and mineral show every year. the most recent one was about two weeks ago. i also do video and photography for the heard (native american) museum.
my place is in a very quiet neighborhood, well outside the bustle of civilization and i've been thinking about trying some garage holography.

Bought a house in Mesa on the border with Tempe, and made it through my first wind/dust storm OK (but need to wash my car!). New reprocessed Coherent 300C from Evergreen on a Tom Musser supplied 5x12' Newport table with all the fixin's! Have to find or build some shelving appropriate to hold the larger lasers in my collection in the house, but right now they're all spread out on the floor of the master bedroom. Free beer and California treats available to anyone who may be available to help me move them into the garage. There are 10 heads that need two to move.
