Default Red or Red which to choose

    Hi all
I am bringing up that old subject again 658 VS 635 I can get a 1 watt 658 or a 500mw 635 for a couple of hundred dollars more, Which is going to give me a better red to mix RGB I know some people bought special dichroics to mix the two but I do not have the room nor the dichro to do that so I have to choose.
    Here is the mix 445 1 watt 532 700mw Red ?

Assuming equal beam specs (a reasonable assumption since both 635 and 650 diodes have horrible beams to start with), you'll get lots more apparent brightness out of the 635.

Based on the power levels you mentioned for green and blue, I'd definitely go for the 635.

    650-60 torch is a waste , I wish I haven't bought them, go for 635 torch instead,

I'm facing the similar dilemma. Go with a higher power 635 with phat beam specs, or a lower power 637 with better beams.

Comparing the specs on the Viasho website of the 635 to the 637 is very enlightening.

Unless the site is out of date, it suggests the 635 can be had with powers up to 5000mW, with 3-6mm diameter beam and 4mRad divergence. Compare this with the 637 on the same site, available up to 200mW output, but 1mm beam diameter and <1mRad divergence.

4mrad divergence is a fire hose.

it all depends on your application. if you're slinging big bright beams around, 5W@4mrad would be fine. if you're going graphic/abstract shows, it would be ugly.

suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

200mw is just 2 single mode diodes combined with a PBS or 1 slightly over driven when its an Opnext. You can build it your self. Plenty of info if you use the search button.....

    Seriously....!

I've had my head swirl on that one a number of times!

Actaully there is only one... 640nm. The rest are just pretenders.

There are at least 6 wavelengths, and of those, there is variation in diode packaging and manufacturer.

Some wavelengths that come to mind are:

    632.8 (sorry, couldn't resist)
    635
    637
    638
    639 (OPSL)
    640
    642
647 (sorry, there it is, again)
    650
    655
    660
    671 (DPSS)

    Some sizes:
    C-Mount
    5.6mm
