I'm using mine as shutters and have them pretty close to the driver, so I'm only using around 150mm. I think most projectors these days are less than 500mm deep, but beam table users may need something longer...
I would share a pic of my setup, but PL appears to be stopping me from doing so...

Personally, i'd say 50cm should be sufficient for most applications. That would be my ideal length
