It seems very fitting, somehow. I don't know why but of all the rock bands out there, Pink Floyd seems to be the best for choreographing lasers too. I think the only other band that comes close is E.L.P.

The Electric Light Orchestra did a nice job with their '78 tour. Complete with the group appearing in a spaceship that opened up at the start of the concert. There were clear domes on the top of the spaceship that emitted green beams from an argon. There was also a backdrop at the rear of the stage that graphics were projected onto. It was a nice mix of all things laser, as well as an illuminated spaceship.

I worked at Lasermedia right after the ELO tour for a couple of years. I remember well wire wrapping the boards for the pattern generators (two channel) which was called the Mandella "0".
Right about that time, Gary Thompson and Paul Roth put together the Imagen, which was a quasi digital controller based on a Pro-Log industrial Z-80 cage system running at 2 Mhz. I say quasi digital because the image and timing were generated digitally, but the gains, offsets, rotations, etc. were done with multiplying DACs. Paul used the output from an onboard 8255 16 bit counter to toggle the NMI line on the processor to output a pair of image byes. Everything fell in to line after that.
Wire wrapped a lot of 16 channel DAC boards as well. Surprised I can still see.
My laser financial ruin started with an article on lasers in Lighting Dimensions magazine back in 77 or 78. Out of curiosity, I bought 1/2 mW SP HeNe from Edmund. I should have sent it back before I opened it.

It's nice to hear about the evolution of laser displays over the years. I did some wire wrapping in my day, not anything significant, just some one-off work that I was doing for my brother. I still have a box of wire-wrap tools and spools of wire stored somewhere out in my garage. That, and I etched a few pcb's back in the day as well. I remember buying the Lighting Dimensions Buyer's Guide that came out every year, pre-internet, it was one of the few resources that I had for who was out there and what was available. Good times!

It's been a long time, but I think there may have been as many as 8. Somewhere around here, I have a schematic, and a bunch of parts. I know I have a couple of 4423 quadrature oscillators and a bunch of 4214 and 4208 multipliers. The op amps were LF 347, if I remember. Also have maybe 8 10K precision linear film slide pots which may or may not fit in your chassis. If you are interested, let me know.
I know at least 6 were built on a PCB platform.
