    Default Another driver design question

In my pursuit to understand and ultimately design my own analog driver I have noticed two specific methods of controlling the drivers. The first method uses an adjustable voltage regulator and the second uses a field effect transistor. Without a doubt it is the design of the entire circuit that ultimately determines performance but I am wondering if one method is generally preferred over the other. What are the pros and cons of using a field effect transistor over a voltage regulator or vice versa?

I've talked to a few engineers about this and they all say that the LM317/338 is not designed for high speed operation. Lostgefrillan's (sp) design is interesting tho. The FET design would be the logical choice for high speed operation I would think .

Ok, I was expecting to hear something along those lines. FET it is. Thanks. If anyone else has any other details I would still be interested in hearing them.
