Setting aside Lasertainment for a moment, if you are concerned that a manufacturer is producing non-compliant products, you can and should report that to CDRH for investigation. You are already in contact with Dale so I would suggest dropping him a note with pictures and asking whether or not the unit can be used under a variance. This is their job, and getting a ruling on a particular product will help to keep your liability down for using potentially non-compliant laser products.

Is Lasertainment selling that unit saying to potential customers that they have a CHRH variance for it though? That looks like an advertising photo. Does your personal one have a certification sticker on the back with a variance number?

Yes mine have the cert stickers with the variance number. It also had stickers over the screws on the top warning about case interlock.

It's damn near identical. The first one I ordered came from laserworld. The other two came from lasertainment.
X-750 is the same as the CS-1000 from laserworld

Its no great secret that Lasertainment and Laserworld are working together. I think they are even sharing office space.

So does most of the rest of the product line. While you can't make assumptions based on just a case (and I think X-Laser will admit to having used cases in the past that probably came from the same supplier as Laserworld) I have the suspicion there is a lot more "Laserworld" about Lasertainment than meets the eye. And certainly more "Laserworld" than for example what was inside X-Lasers previously used similar case design!

A good case design is a good case design... but what's inside I know can be radically different.
