Ouch. Is this a device with any function that might be improvised with existing stuff in a technical household?

    Dnar mate.

I'm pretty sure I've still got my old machine.
I kept it as a spare, just in case...

It's big. Klunky and noisy as all hell compared to a new one, but if you want it till you get back on ya feet and can afford a shiny new one, PM me your address dude and I'll see if I can dig it out and box it up...
If in doubt... Give it a clout?

Wow, that is very generous of you!

Will it function on 230V 50Hz?

I thought about this too and just wished I had pulled apart the loan unit while I had it. Its impressive they can generate so much constant pressure/flow so quietly....

Not sure how reliable and safe a DIY unit would be, this is not something I would like to fail while I sleep with a mask on....

Off the Google DIY devices, surely someone has done this before.

EDIT: my first Google result was this video!!!!!!

Interesting. I always thought that prizes for extreme science tended to be either Darwin OR Nobel. Not both.

On a serious note, just to drive home how serious Sleep Apnea is:

Over the weekend a good friend of one of my coworkers passed away due to chronic obstructive sleep apnea. He had been diagnosed for over a year, but didn't want to use the C-PAP machine because it was uncomfortable. He died in his sleep on Saturday. He was 57 years old.

Bottom line: if you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, get treatment, and get it fast. It can (and will) kill you otherwise.
