so who will whip the llamas @$$ now?

Now would be a very good time to start archiving WinAmp plugins. Those set a standard for compatibility and stability that will hold things together long after WinAmp is gone. Now would also be a good time to rustle up a llama wrangler, one without a whip, that llama has suffered enough.
Reports of its demise may be premature.![]()
Yes. MIDI has died a thousand times. Viva MIDI. It's an open standard. If WinAmp source is released, it is guaranteed indefinite survival.
Ok, I read the link. AOL? Microsoft?! Sod WinAmp, now is a VERY good time to archive those plugins. Those were the real reason WinAmp was great. It's probably the last, and only, open thing we'll ever see of WinAmp again.
I think it's cool it lasted this long. The company I worked for and Nullsoft (makers of Winamp) were acquired simultaneously in the same transaction. One of the stipulations of Nullsoft's acquisition was that Winamp would remain free forever. I wonder if AOL's lack of ability to monetize had anything to do with this decision? I imagine all bets are off if someone else buys it off AOL...
Exactly so. In turn, knowing that Microsoft will likely make this part of a paid-for system, not beign bound by any of Nullsoft's conditions unless Nullsoft can enforce a perpetual condition (as if! Fighting M$ in courts over this has brought far bigger firms to their knees), it is extremely likely that Microsoft, owning WinAmp, will enforce a ban on open use of older WinAmp plugins after recoding WinAmp so it cannot use them, relegating them to the status of MP3 in the hands of anyone not licensed by Fraunhofer, or of XviD. Eventually a very large range of compatible systems and codecs will be starved at the roots, deprived of legality, scaring coders into abandoning the whole system if they want to earn money. So if you value players and codecs that in any way link to this development, archive them now, before they go underground, scatter, and are too hard to find.

There are one or two laser plugins that use Winamp, that would be a bummer.
Someone archive it.
