BMW's laser headlights are 1. A marketing tool. 2. Research into the idea that a classic LED junction has a upper limit of energy density per unit area. This is very limiting in how you design the optics compared to a filament or arc lamp. The laser can beat that limit if you're capable of designing with the blue laser diodes. This is nothing new, the concept has been around for decades.

Odds are this is really some one like Bosch instead of purely BMW.

-the actual surface is bigger than the focal spot because of the rotation of the phosphor-wheel.
-the material of the disk is high temperature resistant
-the efficacy/efficiency of the phosphor-wheel is really good.
-phosphor-wheel is self-cooling because of the rotation.
-the the disk is reflecting all of the light (445, green, IR) back, resulting in a two-pass as a bonus.

It sounds like I have to start shredding Casio projectors to get anywhere in this project.
