Dammit, you're going to get me in a lot of trouble with pictures like that! >.>

Nice DTR! Are these pics w/ the G2 lens or the 3 element? Also, I don't see any correction optics ..

With a standard three element lens. I will get some with a G-2 tonight when I get some time. Just wanted to get some shots up on my lunch break.

Here they are almost exactly the same. This is with a G-2 @ 25 Feet.

    See my full test here.
Topped it out a little over 1.5W and it survived near 3.6A don't know how much further it would go before dimming or going LED but that is where it started folding back like crazy.

Wow almost identical. That's amazing. Same correction optics may work for both if the coating agrees. Is that a 9mm 445 or osram 450?

    It was a 9mm 445.

Sorry I haven't been following the 9mm discussions too much. Is the smearing underneath to do with the can? Is this why people have been unceasing them? Is that a tricky job if so?
I think there's probably a good market for some very simple small footprint adjustable spatial filters right now

I think the smear is an artifact from the g2 lens, or spot on the window. They usually de-can because the beam gets so hot it can burn a small spot on the diode window, or the window can become dislodged. I dont think its recommended because it releases the inert gas, and allows contamination of the diode, shortening its life. There may be other reasons, but these are the only ones I know of.

De-canning is not hard. DTR has an interesting technique I'm sure he'll share.

The smear exists on both the 445 and 520 in the pics above so I'm assuming it's something consistent between the 2.
How do people deal with this on the 445 builds currently? Or just don't bother?
