No, he was just offering some advice from someone who has been around a while.
Plenty of nice gear can be found on ebay -
you just need to know what you're looking at, and stick with name brands.
If you want to get familiar with some of the "affordable" DMX lighting, check out the web sites for companies like Chauvet Lighting, American DJ, and Elation.
They all post videos of their gear on their web sites.
All these companies offer a range of DMX lighting that might be affordable for home / small event use.
Also, if you're in the US (hint - update your location in your profile!!), you can go in just about any Guitar Center and see some pretty good examples of mostly-affordable DMX lighting in action.
Keep in mind that once you add DMX lighting, you will need either a stand-alone DMX controller, or a DMX USB interface and the appropriate software. If you already have - or are thinking about getting - a laser control system, you'll probably want to add a DMX interface that is compatible with your laser control software.
With careful planning and some creative imagination, some fairly inexpensive DMX lighting can be added to some small-scale laser shows and really help enhance your show considerably!!
