Where did I ever say they had no gobos?

I was simply stating that if you used a couple of profile type lights which have a pair of gobo wheels, you can at least do some other interesting stuff, other than waggle thin beams around in the haze.

In fact, I get more out of lighting 'stuff' these days in an interesting fashion, than i do waving beams around (I have lasers for that). A lot of moving head spots these days allow you to do almost similar effects to Opti Solar type effects, with the added bonus of being able to re-focus at will and be brighter.

I wonder how small you could make an oil wheel gobo??....

You are using Bonetti's defense against me, ah?

I thought it fitting, considering the rocky terrain.

How small do you want it Norty?
I know a guy who custom makes them... well I did. Haven't spoken to him in a while but I'm fairly sure he's still at it.

    They're not cheap though!
If in doubt... Give it a clout?

Norty is spot on with the number of heads vs angle, two sharpie copies or two second hand mac 250 Entours, the macs will get the vote every time. Don't get obsessed with newer is better. I still have a big stock of Goldenscan 3's which still look amazing, still reliable and due to their speed can outperform any head, you just need to be more creative due to been limited to 180 deg.
Elation plat 5's are not bad but we use Stagg Hyperions and have not had an issue with any of them, plus parts and support are UK based.
Colour Imagination (hk) are brilliant and we have had no problem with spares.

Has anyone had any experience ordering from PPL Light? ( http://ppllight.com ) They have offered me what would be a great price for a 4 head moving light, provided that they are quality. I will not be purchasing from them unless I can get some reviews.

So.... if you still happen to be around the forum, what gobo's did you go with and what do you feel is an "immense improvement over stock?"

I just bought 4 of them and that statement caught my attention.

Most stock gobos in moving heads do suck. Changing out to say Apollo gobos is a huge improvement. It is the least expensive way to improve the beam quality of moving lights.
Which ones to get depends on the fixtures you have and their features. For example, a lot of the less expensive heads do not have an iris that allows for a narrow beam. So what I would do is toss one of the more useless pattern gobos (tree leaves, busy patterns, etc) and put in a narrow round aperture gobo. Simpler shapes work the best like line, dots and cones, as they provide the best visual beam in the air. If you have two gobo wheels, then you can overlay two different ones and counter rotate to create a shimmer or other type of subtle movement effects. If you have a prism in the fixture, then you can take that to another level and multiply the image and rotate it, again simple shapes work best. A single line gobo rotating opposite a prism creates a cool tumbling triple line effect!
OK so looking at the Intimidator 350 stock gobo load from the manual, this is what I would do:
    Swap the following:
    - Textured glass gobo (16-23) for something like Apollo MS-2104 1/2" Aperture. This is your narrow beam effect.
    - Wavy concentric circles (40-47) for MS-2120 Blades Thin. Great for aerial FX.
    - Thatch gobo (48-55) for MS-2254 Cone Thin.
    - Milky way gobo (56-63) for MS-2090 dots in a line

Now you have some good gobos that have nice definition in the haze, look good rotating, and works well with the Prism all without blasting too much light everywhere.

Thank you!! Great answer. I spent some time on the Apollo site this morning but without being at work with the actual fixture, I wasn't sure exactly what I should be buying. Thanks for taking the time to be so specific.
