it should be fairly trivial to replace your dead diode. 200mW 650nm diodes are only about 10-15$. you might think about moving up to a 100-150mW 642nm. it will be more expensive, but quite a bit brighter due to the difference in wavelengths.

It was powered on for no longer than 1-2 hours per use.
I never switched it on and off quickly.
I always mounted it firmly with zero vibration from speakers/other equipment.
