I had a 200mW version of a very similar 488nm Sapphire a while back - I didn't dare take a tin opener to that one though!

What an interesting way of mounting and making electrical connections to components at the same time.
Yes these are assembeled in a clean room robotic plant in Germany; the same one where 215M and 315M lasers are made. A thick ceramic circuit board substrate and connections for electrical melting of solder to align everything. Every laser is identical except defects. These lasers now span 355 nm to 594 nm but still no red and oddly no IR either, maybe next year. High quality stuff...

I know this is a very very big stretch but I wonder if it can be replicated.
Minus the electrical melting of solder (not even sure how they bonded the mirrors).
There are ways of creating your own "ok grade" clean room and it seems *though not very cheap* ceramic pcb's can be obtained.
Wonder what the outcome would be from a cost and time perspective.
I think I understand the beam path. Maybe someone could draw it in to show what's going on. Phil - what was misaligned and how was it corrected? Thanks for posting!
OPSLs are so awesome. They look almost simple but would be so impossible for the hobbyist to build .. dang ..

we don't know how it was misaligned or if there is a bad spot or dirt on the OPS chip or what. Pushing near the crystal makes it lase enough for pics. I pushed real hard and it held a few mW long enough for photos. Only 250 hours... Sam has beam paths drawn on the laser FAQ site...
