..Already well-stated, but I'll voice my support for the good 'Best Practices' answers, above..

..and if the laser is 16' up in a box-truss / 9' up on a tri-mount / on some other-rig, behind the DJ? I'm sure you can 'extrapolate the point'...

Sure-do.. The - whole idea - behind Interlocks / keyswitches / beam-shutters - and E-Stops - is positive, cognisant-Operator control *at All-times*... And the 'quick-access' an E-Stop affords - right at the Op's controls / reach (otherwise, what's the point, really?) may, indeed, make 'the difference', between someone getting hurt / an injury-suit, etc, etc.. Or not..

.Ya, the 'Regs' may sometimes seem 'restriktiv' but.. Some 'restrictions' are just a good-idea.. (ie: seat belts, etc..) Anyhoo, you get the point..

Some 'light reading' for you.. http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/De.../ucm094361.htm ..What's (still) required, safety-controls-wise, and.. Why... Here's further insight into the 'rationales'.. (PDF) http://www.fda.gov/downloads/Medical.../UCM119257.pdf ..And http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/De.../ucm094445.htm

    cheers..

so are you using a DB9 connected interlock switch with restart delay?
more precisely, in America, are you required to run estop to, what is often a DB9 connector for interlock (this is another cable) , or is it fine to use the interlock over the ilda connection as our UK friends do?

Restart-delay is a 'separate entity' / circuit in the PJ, from the Interlock-loop - but, it can, and should, work 'in-tandem'.. ie: breaking the Interlock-loop causes the 'restart delay' circuitry to trip / keep the Emission at-bay, *untill* the fault / situ in room is cleared / the Operator 'positively' re-engages / initiates Emission (ie: a 'start' button / keyed e-stop, etc)

The DB-9 is just a 'convenient' *optional* extension of the Intlk-loop that ties-into the ILDA-connx loop, to make a 'remote interlock' (ie: E-Stop) easier to integrate, w/o having to 'yank the DB-25' to break the loop.. However, a DB-9, in and of-itself, is not some "9-pin requirement", ie: andy-con's fine quad-ILDA I/O example there, etc.. It's also useful for, ie: when, a PJ has 'local modulation-input override' (It has a button / switch, etc to get laser-output w/O an ILDA-sig In..) and the DB-9 would serve for a 'remote-interlock', in such a case..

For a 'DIY' situ, products like this: http://shop.stanwaxlaser.co.uk/ilda-...board-55-p.asp ..make quite quick werk of it, especially with that nice 'Panel-mount plate' option, w/ the DB's all ready to rock, etc..

In the US you are supposed to have a remote interlock connector. It can be any design that you like. I myself use stanwax boards and daisy chain my estops. The first projector needs 5 pins. Each additional projector needs only 3. I use DB9 because it convenient and most projectors already have the hole cut for it in the back panel.
