Default Floating Points Live: Lasers and Phosphorescence

Last night I saw Floating Points.

I really enjoy their set, but the reason I am posting is to share their use of lasers. They only used one laser and a circular backdrop painted with phosphorescent paint. Not unheard of, but the results were amazing.

software looks a lot like LSX
suppose you're thinkin' about a plate o' shrimp. Suddenly someone'll say, like, plate, or shrimp, or plate o' shrimp out of the blue, no explanation. No point in lookin' for one, either. It's all part of a cosmic unconciousness.

Anyone have a source for materials needed? I found this.

*EDIT* I found some older threads on the topic:

Possibly not exactly what you need, but I just bought an assortment of UV reactive phosphorescent paints from an ebay seller based in Romania; they have quite a range of types / colours available; the sellers ID is apulum

dkumpula has been doing a lot of work recently with this sort of effect in his home disco and did a demo at FLEM. I'm sure he can give you a lot of pointers Sal, if you're looking to experiment. The paint isn't cheap!

This is really funny timing. I missed this thread start because I've been preparing the disco with luminescent paint, glow-in-the dark tape, and dedicated (2 so far with one more planned) blue-ray laser projectors with an infra-red diode to erase (!) the zinc-sulfide glow when desired. I was just aligning the second projector last night. (Aligning 405nm with IR is even more fun than aligning a regular RGB projector! )

So far I've experimented with both strontium aluminate paint (the expensive stuff) and zinc-sulfide (very cheap) and for the types of effects that Sal is talking about, zinc-sulfide is the way to go as it mostly fades within 5 minutes as opposed to strontium aluminate which can still be seen an hour later after one short exposure to 405nm. I've covered about half the disco in cheap the glow in the dark paint and intend cover the majority of the rest of the walls shortly.

I've also experimented with several GITD painting techniques in an effort to try to capture the artistic efforts of street artists like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyvxuzDOq0M

I'll try to capture some video shortly. <Edit: I captured this a couple months ago during testing using a panel painted with strontium-aluminate on one side and zinc-sulfide on the other>

Assuming there is adequate interest, I was thinking about doing a demo and tutorial for GITD painting using laser projectors at SELEM. I'd love to hear about other folks trials using this medium.

    Oh Sal,

I meant to say that this stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Krylon-K03150-...ilpage_o08_s02 is dirt cheap and works well for laser art painting. I've found that about 4 of these small cans is enough to cover an 8 foot x 8 foot wall. Early experimentation showed that other lighting effects including projecting video onto the painted surface does not result in a distracting glow, so I'm 'going nuts' with the stuff.
