If I could work metal I would make my own mounts and do 10mm lens.

jors just got my serious attention so I might stop this build.

The bigger the easier to calibrate right?

    What did he do?

[QUOTE=Nii;329313]The bigger the easier to calibrate right?

longer focal length is easier to align. size of the lens doesn't matter.

    say 50mm and 100mm fl vs 5mm and10mm fl

The 50/100 pair is 10 times easier to align then the 5/10 pair even though the same 2x magnification results.

If I had to go as small as possible I would not go below say 25/50 and that would be a real pain to align the pinhole by hand.
Now if you are going with a nice three axis translation mount then yes you can go smaller. Also a ton more expensive. Remember what Planters did is bring a 1k device into the realm of practical. Yes you can do better as jors shows but it gets really expensive. Hell I burned a hole in duct tape and it worked ok. Just not real stable.

A friend of mine suggested having a stencil made like you use for solder paste and just cutting the holes out. So you order a whole sheet with different sized holes. Might do it but I'm pretty much stunned at the moment by the builds I'm seeing and wondering why bother. Thinking save my money and just buy it....Oh hell I think I just crossed over. I thought I'd never type those words.

Does shorter focal length also negatively affect optical losses by any chance?

no but optical issues will get worse like spherical aberration and such.

I also admire his achievement BUT .. if Jordi had taken any notice of this philosophy, he wouldn't have ever reached his top end build.
    Cheers
PS. @ "size of the lens doesn't matter." ........not so! ..... consider the mounting and positioning ease! ...as usual, Jor's election shows a great deal of thought behind this decision which is not necessarily apparent at a quick glance.

    I see.
An offtopic question (apologies), I take it from that thread that anodized baseplate does not affect the ehat transfering too much?

Rash assumption (assuming ehat = heat) I fear !
    Cheers
Hopefully Mr.P will jump in here and explain why heat boundaries are just as important as the conductivities of the materials.
