Default what PSU for laser driver?

    Hello everyone.
    Here is a simple question.
DTR lists diodes on his websites and pictures showing how much power you can get with how much voltage and current.
    https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/diodes

The diodes I'm looking into take at most 4.8V from a bench power supply.
But if I connect the diode through a diode driver to a power supply, can I still use a 5V PSU? With 5V psu I have much more spare Amps than if I use a 12V power supply rated at same power (Watts).

... most diode drivers needs some voltage-drop as "reserve" to work properly -- for my 4-5V diodes and 2-3V "reserve" I'm using 8V to 12V power supplies ...

I use 2 x 3.5vdc ones to reduce heat in driver card FET....Or a variable buck DC-DC reducer after the 12vdc PSU
    Cheers
