hey, i think that was me. sorry. i am stretched super thin right now and haven't been checking pm's.

i don't know of a way to hide threads from search engines. i'm not sure if it's even possible. you might be able to set up a select group that's not publically available, but i'm not sure if that works or not.

I was wondering if it would be possible or appropriate to make this thread invisible to the public and only visible to members. And plan on posting a lot of stuff and being very open but I don't know if that's necessary for the whole world to see.

I've been holding off posting stuff until I got a response but I think I might have never actually sent the message. Could a moderator help me out here?

    Thanks

Hello everyone, I've decided to continue the posting even though my previous post said that I was worried about posting here publicly. The reason was I was afraid some random Google searchers might try to rob me but I think that small risk. The benefits of sharing with and learning from you guys out where those risk.

    Today I am posting a Coherent GEM-30.

Based on the connector I think I know which power supply goes to it—a constant current/constant voltage supply that goes up to 70 Amperes.

What should I know before I try to start this up, and is there a market for this kind of Laser?

Feet have been added to the bottom and some electronics have been added to make this module Plug and Play (I think).

    that's a low power co2 laser head.

my guess is it's rf pumped and will require a control signal to activate it. probably pwm, but i can't say off the top of my head. if it's functional and meeting spec, it might be useful to me. i have been toying with the idea of building a lower power laser engraving / cutting rig. i have a large one, but a laser like this would be better for fine engraving work.

I'm going to check for the RF power supply, could be with me or the other half of this stuff is still in Youngstown.

the rf driver may be built into the head. i have a 20W luxar co2 head that has an internal rf drive.

So it seems that I should be able to drive this with 48 volts DC and the RF will be generated inside the module. You can also see the name of the reseller that my uncle purchased from on the original box which includes all the precise foam. Not sure if that reseller typically refills the gas but I'm sure that he didn't have many minutes on this module given that it was used just on his bench. He was definitely a laser for lasers sake kind of guy -- no light shows or engraving -- he just like to get setups working and experiment.

I think this is the PS:

I finally have a weekend free that I'm not traveling it's been a long time. Is anyone still interested in doing a Skype session this weekend? I can lay out what I have here in Findlay and we can explore together.

I'm about to do a little more research about how to safely test this CO2 laser.

Here are my intentions about selling stuff so here: I would much rather sell things to you guys at a good deal than try to get a little more money on eBay from strangers. To me, your expertise and genuine love of lasers worth a lot. I'm trying to find the right balance between posting interesting things + learning things and just posting ads so let me know if I'm doing okay I really do want to do the right thing, but also recoup some money as well.

yes. that looks like it should work. you may also need a pwm signal to drive the laser. i can do a little investigation for you. i'll be happy to do some skype time with you this weekend.
