Hi Bill!
Welcome to PhotonLexicon! Glad to have you here, and glad to have you and your wife for SELEM 2007 in Newton, NC. I presume you'll be joining us for dinner Friday evening then, right? (Dinner will be at the Artist's Cafe in downtown Newton, just a couple blocks from the auditorium.)
Wow! Coming all the way from Michigan! You get the honor of having the longest commute then...Drive safe pal...
Yeah, we're going to start setting up around noon on Friday. Any help is appreciated. (Mostly moving tables and chairs and stuff to get set up on stage, though we've also got some gear to offload.)
NOTE TO ALL: We are still looking for a more powerful amplifier. DZ is going to be bringing some very nice speakers to augment the house sound system, but they're rated for 300 watts each and he only has a 100 watt per channel amp. (The house system is an anemic 50 watts per channel) So if anyone has access to a 300 watt per channel amp, or better yet an entire sound system, please reply here... Lasers always look better with loud music!![]()
Aaron;
Right now this is the complete list of attendees:
*Allthatwhichis + girlfriend
*Buffo + guest (my son)
Dreambeamz (Sunday only)
+ wife
Marconi (90% sure at this point)
MechEng3 (Saturday only)
*Mixed Gas
*Pangolin & Hayden
Spec (90% sure at this point)
*Steve-o
Sway + guest (New members)
*Witcher88 + wife
So that's 12 members, and 18 total people including guests. The one's with the "*" in front of their names are signed up for dinner on Friday evening at the Artist's Cafe.
There's room for more, if anyone else decides they want to come. (I haven't heard back from YaddaTrance yet - sure would be great if he could come...)

Well I have some slightly dissapointing news. I bought these speakers from Circuit City just after FLEM, since I blew the ones I brought to FLEM. They were said to be 300W speakers each. Last night I was looking on the manufacturers website to see if they had an amp that could go with it or one they recommended. Welp, turns out they are 300W peak, true RMS is 150W per speaker. My amp still is not even good enough for that since it is 170W total. Sounds great in my garage, but for this big auditorium, it will be lacking I think. Anyway, my point is, we certainly are not going to have the "kick-ass" speakers that we had at FLEM and since Pink Floyd sounds so much better with alot of bass, its going to be a bit sad... I'm just about out of options for providing anything else, I'm going to check around a bit this weekend and see if there is anything else I can come up with but I'm already going to have a busy weekend with other things...DZ is going to be bringing some very nice speakers
You can make just about any speaker very loud, what we need is a system that can provide some good kick to the low frequencies!Lasers always look better with loud music!![]()

I got a old guitar amp--75 watts RMS with a blown speaker coil, and a receiver with 100 watts total. Hell, if I hadnt just received a multi -thousand dollar speeding ticket courtesy of the state of virginia's new laws I could go out and buy a 700 watt 12V car-pumpamp and rig a power supply--
That is if my greenie ps didnt just die tonite..
D'oh - fck
the luck aint been runnin good last couple of days...
Gonna be there anyway even tho.....rar...
That would be one hell of a power supply you'd have to rig. 110VAC throught a transformer with a regulator that could source nearly 60amps at 12VDC. It would be easier to just park your car outside the door, run cables inside and leave the car running!700 watt 12V car-pumpamp and rig a power supply
Just the power supply died? What kind of supply does it need? I may have one you can use or put one together if you need. If its just a p/s issue, that will be easy to fix, if laser itself, thats not so good...That is if my greenie ps didnt just die tonite..
It's my fault-- my own design/build -- i'm sure I can get it figured out by this w/e.
4 12V car batts in parallel w/ hefty charger should do the trick...
--a 10F cap on the end wouldnt hurt tho--
or a 500 watt soundstage amp-- ..price diff-- about 5k?

I dunno what to do to help?
let me kno![]()
aint got too much bucks tho..![]()
Don't worry about it steve-o. We'll manage with what we have and have a great time. I just figured it would be nice to at least have an amp to fully drive what I have. Looks like I can get a decent amp off of ebay for 300 bucks or less. Problem is, I really don't want to spend that much on something that I will just use for this event. It would be way more than what I need for my garage! If I can find a cheap amp for less than 100 buck this weekend I will probably pick it up. It wont be a "clandestiny" style sound system, but it will work.I dunno what to do to help?

Hey guys, we may have a solution to the sound system problem...
Steve Roberts (Mixed Gas) called me last night, and he's got a rack-mount stereo amp that can be bridged to deliver 120-150 watts to a single channel. So Dave, if you can bridge your amp to deliver 150 watts to a single channel, then we're all set. We bridge both amps and have each one drive a single speaker.
Granted, this still isn't a 300 watt per channel system, but it's not bad... We'll also have the house system don't forget. And the auditorium is small; it only seats 500 people including the balcony area. So long as it sounds great up on stage I think we'll be fine. (We don't care if the bass falls off once you get up into the cheap seats at the top of the balcony, right?)
In other news, I had a really nice chat with Steve last night. (Sorry for keeping you on the phone so long, buddy!) One of the things he mentioned was the fact that when he tunes galvos, he uses an oscilloscope and a square wave generator to start with. I've never seen this done before, so I'll be sure to capture it on video. (Sounds cool!)
Also, I'm proud to announce that we've got a few more door prizes. First, even though he won't be there, Fred Blockland (Astroguy) has donated a hand-made 50 mw green laser pointer. He started with a metal flashlight housing (like a mini-mag) and built the laser into that housing. With fresh batteries it makes 50 mw! He's donating it to the event. (THANKS FRED!!!) Also, I've got a 15" hene laser w/ power supply that's making around 7 mw that will be up for grabs.
More details: Everyone should be getting a black T-shirt with "SELEM 2007" embroidered (sp?) on the front. The cost of the shirts is built in to the $50 per PL member admission charge, with a little help from David Zurcher and myself.(Big thanks to Steve-o for coming up with the logo design, and *huge* thanks to David and his family for agreeing to get the stitching done for free!)
Likewise, Bill Benner from Pangolin is planning to bring some official Pangolin T-shirts to the event. These are also black, with the pangolin logo on the front and the famous raster-scan image of a woman's face on the back.
And just a reminder - there will be plenty of people there at the auditorium on Friday starting at noon. We'll be unloading, setting up, and probably working on the dimmer for the house lights as well. I expect Steve Roberts will be hooking up his 3 phase power around this time as well. So if anyone else wants to stop there first and unload their gear, that's great.
Hopefully all the work will finish up in the early afternoon to give everyone time to check into their hotels and get cleaned up before dinner. (We have to be out of the auditorium by 5 PM on Friday because that's when the office folks leave.) Dinner will be at 6 PM at the Artist's Cafe.
Adam
