    Default Laser pen for Augmented reality show - Need spec info on this laser. 50mW 532nm

    I am currently running a cool outdoor planetarium and we will be using a laser to show different things in the sky. For this, we need to apply with Transport Canada and fill a form with various specifications. These specs do not appear on the manufacturers website and I was hoping someone here can direct me in the right direction.

    The Laser is a basic 50mW 532nm, like this one -
    Specs I have are as follows
    Output Power 50mW
    Laser Class 2
    Laser Color Green
    Wavelength 532nm
    Irradiated Range 3000m
    Beam Diameter < 2.5 mm
    Beam Divergence <2.8 mRad

    I need to find EXACT figures for the following specs (not less than)

    Beam Diameter at 1/e points Centimetres (cm) (not mm) -
    Beam Divergence 1/e at full angle Milliradians (mrad) -
    MPE (W/cm²) -
    Pre-Corrected Power (PCP) Watts (W) -
    SZED (for 100 μW/cm² level) -
    CZED (for 5 μW/cm² level) -
    LFED (for 50 μW/cm² level) -

    ... caution! -- many countries will permit outdoor/public use of free beaming lasers (laser-pointers) with more than 5mW!

    The form you're referring to is 26-0754E - "Notice of Proposal to Conduct Outdoor Laser Operations", right?

    In that case, you should know that the items you're asking about are not "specifications" but rather a series of calculated values that define the exposure hazard for the outdoor laser activity. These are important calculations that would normally be completed by a Laser Safety Officer. They define the exposure risk of the proposed laser effect. These calculations are not to be taken lightly.

    There are a number of on-line tools that can assist you with the calculations, although in truth the math isn't terribly complicated. You really do need to understand the theory behind the calculations though. Because the data on that form is used by the Government to determine if the event will be safe or not.

    By signing that form you are taking personal responsibility for the accuracy of the information presented. In many ways it is very similar to the process in the USA for applying to the FAA for a letter of non-objection to an outdoor laser show.

    My point is not to tell you that this is impossible. It's not - you can do this. I just want you to understand that this is not something you're going to fill out in an afternoon. This is a big undertaking, particularly since it appears that you do not have any training in the field of laser safety. And you really, *really* need to get it filled out correctly.

    I suggest you research the subject a bit more before you try filling out the form yourself. Unfortunately there is a lot to learn. Here are some good links to start:

    Another suggestion would be to meet with a trained Laser Safety Officer in your area and see if they would be willing to help you learn more about the subject. Perhaps there is a laser show company in Quebec that might agree to assist you?

    The laser class is most definitely bunged up -- it should be Class IIIb.
    Class 2 applies only to visible, CW lasers with an output that can never exceed 1mW.
