    Default Old Laser Catalog

Everyone over 40 probably remembers Metrologic Instruments, maker of educational lasers and kits. These were the lasers we grew up with. Lots of them are described in this catalog from 1973, with lots of pictures. The page below describes their model ML-442 He-Cd laser and shows its plasma tube without the asbestos insulation that covered it in the head.

Very cool! I also have a laser catalog of 1989, which advertises a lot of different lasers that were manufactured by different companies in the former USSR. I've already digitized it, some pages have poor quality. It is interesting that price of each laser is included in the datasheets.

It's always cool to see a Metrologic reference come up on here.... I actually in a way still work for Metrologic (Now Honeywell).
I came on just at the tale end of the educational kits which I was also fond of as a child. I remember fogging up the display case glass dreaming of buying the old Metrologic "build your own" HeNe kit at Edmund Scientific (When that store was open) ;-)

I actually framed old mechanical drawings of the white line series HeNe's and have them still hanging in my office. See below....

Since all my Sr. co-workers know I love and respected the history of Metrologic so much I have been left lots of Metrologic materials. When I have the time I will try to take some pics also to share.

@ Steve.... What is that patent reference you mentioned? Is it a Metrologic Patent? ;-)

There should be a "US" in front of Steve's patent number above. It's for their He-Cd plasma tube.

I would be very interested in anything from Metrologic from the 1960s. Harry Knowles was an early and very enthusiastic supporter of holography.

Indeed he was... Harry really pulled together some amazing holographic optic commercialization for our scanning products. Many of my coworkers worked along side Richard Rallison and Lee Dickson and I love hearing the cool stories of the early developments. I will see what I have in my stock and snap some pics if anything seems interesting.

Here's the December 1969 issue of Popular Electronics with the article by Harry Knowles about home building a He-Ne laser. Another article the following month described making holograms.

Harry Knowles evidently designed the silicon used in the 2n2222A, Wow! Ex Bell Labs, No wonder!
