You know you can use any vector drawing app that saves dxf files, and import them into LaserBoy? LaserBoy has special features for cleaning up dxf imports and making them ready to scan. DeltaCAD is a very nice dxf app. You can open a raster image and trace over it. You can even zoom in for the details and the raster image zooms too. It's pretty cool.

All software has a learning curve usually proportional to its capabilities and unique features. Pointing with a mouse is in no way easier than tapping a key.

... I'm using Corel Draw (actually Corel X8 SE) for this - there you can vectorize contours or "centerlines", if vectorizing hand-drawn sketches ...

Your dxf conversion is cool (i know its used in ildsos) however its very inefficient as laserboy delivers the content "untouched" .. so the point data is too heavy in most cases.

I'm a little late to this thread, but what about using a pen mouse instead? At 12 bucks, it's way cheaper than a tablet...

Hi, I am using XP-Pen Deco 01 V2 drawing pad and I am satisfed by this tablet and its abilities.

As for me, it’s good both for beginners and experienced artists.

Otherwise, pay attention also to XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro . Inexpensive tablet with displaying picture screen.

No visual on screen.. it requires more practice and quick strokes is a forget it situation.. a lot of artists also want the pressure sensitity and need to press down on a surface to do quick stroke brushes.

Not 3k worth of love.

the pen monitor for 300-500 is perfect.

Somewhere(s) at home I have a 20x20" Kontron digitizer that listed for $5K that I got for $50 for helping out an auctioneer. It had a five button puck with a glass reticle, and could be back lit, so you could place the crosshair on the puck exactly where you wanted to record a point. I never used it for Lasers, that was already in my past 30 years ago. The watcom has two switches, so if you can record point by point rather than strokes it might be really nice for lasers.
