would current licence owners have the option to move over to the new licence scheme

and how would you prevent old users from using the older bitmap on earlier versions and the new one on version 4 + at the same time ?

I hate it when people ruin it for everyone.
I would prefer it if you guys just say: If something gets stolen you should use your insurance to get your damages covered, pangolin is not responsible for theft..
The most Valuable gear should contain a gps tracker on the inside and insurance costs SHOULD be factored in with shows.. (I mean a projector drop could happen when gear is handled by many people over a long course of time)

regarding online activation: preferably no.... it could be very risky on fixed installs where a connection isnt present or gets lost!

On topic of online activity however:
What I do would like to see is subscription based add-ons for BEYOND.. I love beyond and the value you get is amazing however sometimes I think people are getting TOO much value.. once a pangolin product is sold: That's it.. no more sale.
Rather then a products saturation of selling to as many people as possible.. having some features/benefits behind a subscription keeps products more exclusive and keeps a market healthy and ensures a sustainable pay for development, there is plenty of money being made in the industry and if people aren't willing to pay for it they should also not get it.

please keep the bmp licensing system to unlock certain features for special cases.

On topic of piracy: keep the software working like grandma does.. but if network is found to be present use the opertunity to attempt to contact a database hosted by pangolin that looks to see if the serial number is blacklisted (in case of theft or other fraudulent cases)
if no connection is possible or the database cannot be reached: The software will continue working.

If a clear match on the blacklist is found: either a report will be send to pangolin to persue measures or the software is given a flag to prevent it from running until contact with pangolin is established.
Make the connection not mandetory however!

I like the if it’s stolen deal with it through insurance route. You can do a compromise and require internet once every 6 months. That seems reasonable. I hate dongles. I always fear them getting lost or breaking off in a usb slot. Having the fb4 as the dongle is just perfect. Big enough I won’t misplace it but still portable.

i also think the once every six months let you control that rogue person who sells a license who should not have....

native instruments, protools, Adobe, office....pretty common these days.

    please don’t go subscription however.

I have seen vst dongles break.. i was on a tour with a big artist and we had a party and during that party we got to find out a key dongle usb broke.. gladly it was a commonly available security dongle and through some effort the license could be transferred but PLEASE stay away from these thing.. they are small so easy to lose or forget.

Regarding subscription: I wouldnt do it for core software only for recieving specific features that most dont use.. more exotic to protect areas of the market from saturating while making it sustainable from a financial aspect. For instance 3ds max has plugins like vray which you pay annually for and while I HATE creative cloud thats more of a matter of: This is it or you have no software at all.. in case of a plugin it's more of a choice and you could work without it with the flip side of some things being more difficult to do

an ip ping back could help find the person who stole the unit if it has to call home. A where’s my fb4 function like iPad. How about a brick it call as well. Make them call in person to get it unlocked with a code. Cable tv does that. 6 months is plenty. In that time you can find internet. How about Bluetooth to your phone for network. Do a two factor kind of thing. Now you can’t log on without the two factor. Hardware with software. I like this last one though I’d not like doing each time I logged on but I would.

last isssue fixed installs in a bar or such. It might very well not ever see internet.

    two factor check

Depending how you actually implement the online activation, it could be OK if it's not overly intrusive or dependent on constant internet... in other words, not a "live" connection. So, for example, you could be connected to the internet in the office and once you disconnect, you now have "x' number of days of use, (7 days, 14 days??), before an activation check would need to be done again, giving you another period of days. This should help prevent issues at live events, or when internet may not be accessible for a few days. For the license owner, a login and ability to manage the licenses I own... just like I can do with Adobe, or any number of other products. If a computer was stolen, I could login and deactivate the license on that computer which frees up the license, then, install and activate it on the new computer. As shown in the example, Adobe also checks activation status online (see dates in the example) and I can deactivate a computer quickly and easily by using that option...

Last idea but possibly Hackable. If you don’t have internet generate a code while on the internet good for 5 days or so. So now you log in before you go, get a two factor code you take with you. If your gear gets ripped the gear is bricked without the two factor that only you have on your phone. Maybe even a hardware card to make codes. I use a product called DUO at work. Nagging but simple to use.

issue is any of these schemes is hackable with the right keygen. Two factor requires hardware and software and makes it much less likely the thief will get both. But again, let insurance cover the cost.

My vote is no online activation.

I develop mobile enterprise software, and our philosophy is "offline first". The software must always be capable of operating offline, the user must always be able to do his work and sync later. As others have mentioned, the mobile device (laptop) may be taken into all sorts of places with no connectivity.

This is a difficult problem for Pangolin to solve.

And attempting to eliminate 100% of piracy will be impossible.

LOL. Yea, when I think of mobile and enterprise, the first the I always think of is "offline".
