Hey! This thing actually works!
Thank you to Karlkar for the gift and Steve for delivery.
It's pretty out of whack but I have not opened it up yet. The scanners seem to be pretty good.
Let's say I wanted to buy a fully assembled analog rgb unit that had the best beam specs.
No need for lots of power.
What suggestions do I get from the hive mind?
James.

As for your request, Goldenstar makes some pretty decent stuff if you opt for her better analog drivers. Mimi's integral lens corrected diodes, known as "fiber corrected"
are the closest thing you can get to a gas laser without buying an OPSL.
No use to buy anything under 1.5 watts today. Besides if you buy a hotter projector, then put a glass or metallic OD 4 neutral density filter in there, you have a programming laser at 50-100 mW with good linearity with the drivers.
Or buy a "fiber corrected" RGB module from John at TAI, put it a box with a pair of DT40 or Scannermax 506 with Max DSP. That is what I did, and went Scannermax, because DT 30K or better are difficult to get.
"We loves us our Scannermax." My Christmas show for my church was spectacular with the 506s. With the Mach DSP you can also use XY-100 protocol and move Laserboy into the purely digital world with no sound card.
I think you'll need to 3D print a new mount for the 405 in that freebie. I could get red and green to align but not the violet. Clip the chicken bands holding the cables together as you open it up, or it will pull itself apart.
X-Laser makes cool stuff, as does Able I have one Able laser laser projector that I rebuilt with the Goldenstar 5 watt RGB and the Scannermax mentioned above. Did I mention the Able case is very well cooled and built like a battleship?

Um.
I was thinking more along the lines of something like this:

Does anyone have any experience with one of these?

W1000 (goldenstarlaser.com)
Pay a little more, get something more likely to not be TTL with a 0-5 input.

Hobby grade analog drivers if you can find them, that won't kill your diodes , are un-obtainium right now. It's Ukraine-Russia thing. The good ones came from. Russia. Second choice is Poland, but 150$ and. Shipping to mod that 100$ module puts you squarely in the W1000 price range.
Peace

I have always used die4drives. I still have a bunch of blank boards (that I am not selling). The schematic is available from http://www.die4laser.com/dvd-rec/Die4Drive.htm in case anyone wants to DIY their own. It doesn't have the features that some have but I have been very happy.
