    Default A DIY Supercontinuum Laser

    Long time since I have posted in here, but I though you all might like this.

    A home-made Supercontinuum Laser on a budget.

    This produces coherent light from 430nm all the way to 670nm as a continuous glorious spectrum!



    There will be a follow up video on generating frequency combs as well!

    Premier test avec une fibre monomode 9/125 de 50 mètres. J'attends une bobine de fibre de 1000 mètres. Pour l'instant je n'obtient pas le spectre rouge.

    Such a nice lab you have there!

    I have tested successfully with Stilbene-3 and Coumarin-1. The only difference between the two are where the spectrum starts, and the relative output power.

    Is the light well focused into the end of the fiber? (I don't see a lens in the photo) A 20x Microscope objective will do.

    I had no evidence of broadening with Rhodamine-6G

    Looking forward to your results!

    EDIT: Also, I see a coupler in the middle of the fiber, try without it first, you should see a result with just 50m of cable. Couplers are too lossy for this kind of work and can damage the fiber ends.

    With multimode fiber you might see Raman shifting. I have a Raman shifting fiber for my pulsed 532nm laser, I will have to dig it out and try it.

    Very nice work.

    Are you guys having any informations on how long/how much power your input pulse has?
    And which wavelength?

    Seems like the continuum starts at the laser wavelength and broadens up to longer wavelengths, correct?

    The input power is around 10 - 20uJ in 2.4 nanosecond (about 5-8kW peak) though I have yet to accurately measure this (sensors are in the post!)

    The primary mechanisms are Cascaded Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) and Self Phase Modulation (SPM). The output wavelengths are always longer than the input wavelengths, so when I designed the original experiment, I chose a dye with a wavelength as close to 400nm as I could, to try and cover the whole visible spectrum. In this case the dye Stilbene-3 (peak at 426nm) was used.

    Default Mesure de la puissance laser à colorant.

    J'ai fais une mesure du laser à colorant COUMARINE 3 à 0.001 Mol avec un microjoulemètre de MOLECTRON 450mV/mJ ce qui me donne 160 uJ pour le laser à azote TE avec un pulse de 2.5 ns et pour le laser à colorant 10uJ et 2.5 ns.
    J'estime que 5 à 10 % de la lumière rentre dans la fibre (je vais faire des mesures d'ici quelques jours)

    Default An update ! Mutimode Fiber




    Supercontinuum using Multimode Fiber.

    My guess on Soliton fission in the video is wrong by the way! The brilliant combs in the video are caused by Cascaded Stimulated Raman Scattering (CSRS) alone.
    You don't see the comb in singlemode Fiber, because Self Phase Modulation smooths them out(probably!).

    There are measurements in the video (powers, pulse widths etc), as well as beautiful beam shots! Enjoy!
