There's probably an easy answer but I don't know it. How do I focus an IR beam when I can't see it?
I have only basic kit, i.e. DVM etc.

use a video camera
No good. Pointed it at webcam and can hardly see anything so assume diode is shagged

no dont point it at the cam
use the cam to veiw the beam and the spot
and your web cam may have a ir filter
Works even better with a monochrome video camera such as an old CCTV camera.
Use a cam with night vision and a some fog to help see the beam.
I use my Sony DV Cam and turn on the "night shots" setting. Again you are looking for the dot on the wall, not the "low" power reddish light down the barrel...![]()
