I hired an Italian guy to do my wires. Now they look like spaghetti!
I've been using Inkscape a lot. It is actually more like Coral Draw than illustrator, which is a plus IMO.
I use it for work because it has a good EPS export function.
It is quite stable, has some minor issues but the ones I've found can be worked around.
I've advocated the use of the SVG file format (native to inskape) for laser art in the past but have found very little support. See this
The sprites used in Laseroids and Laser tennis have been created with inscape and converted to ilda format for use in the games.
How did you handle the conversion from inkscape to ILDA? Just curious...

Hehe, a lot of long nights work on an algorithm that became so complex that it is hard to describe. The SVG file is actually XML so reading the file is easy. It then samples the shapes and determines where the points should be according to some curvature filter. Optimizing this bit is the hard part and I'm still occasionally thinking about how to improve it. It also sorts the shapes to give a near-optimal routing path.
I should note that inkscape has its own color gradient defintion, which is not part of the offical SVG definition. This allows beautiful color gradients
When you get this algorithm tweaked, are you going to release it? Sounds like it might become a popular download!

Here is a lot of interesting stuff located here

I think there is SVG and Flash import.
