Default Injuries caused by drugs or wrong laser?

A July 15 report on the Russian news service Kommersant says that "ophthalmologists revealed no retinal burns" and "the real cause could be drug consumption but this lead calls for additional checking." (See http://www.kommersant.com/p-12833/r_...er_eye_damage/)

Even if the injuries were caused by lasers, ILDA suspects that a pulsed laser was wrongly used for audience scanning. In 40 years of laser shows, there has only been one mass injury like this. It was in Hungary, where some idiot put a pulsed laser into the crowd. Pulsed lasers are fine for sky shows and overhead beams. But they should NEVER be used in an audience.

For the Moscow show, reports said the laser was going to be used for a sky show, but due to rain it was aimed down into the audience. This also would be consistent with pulsed laser use.

ILDA does not know for sure, but a pulsed laser is our strongest suspect if it was a laser at all.

For "gottalovelasers", I am sorry to hear about the cancelled show. Unfortunately, news about drugs or illegal pulsed lasers probably won't reassure anyone who is irrational or overly paranoid. For everyone else, simply be sure to hire a company that follows international safety standards such as IEC 60825-3, and local laws.

In the U.S., this means you should hire a company with an active, approved variance from the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological health. The variance will cover both the equipment, and how the show is performed.

To help inform and reassure the news media and public, ILDA has more information at our website about the show. (At this exact moment, 10:10 AM EDT, I don't have the revised info at the site -- Microsoft tech support is remotely using my computer -- but I expect to post the new Kommersant info as soon as they fix my machine.)

    Hi Ildadirect

welcome to the forum, im guessing this is patrick or tim ...

if so thanks for the update, it will be sad if the injurys turn out to be caused by drug use as the damage to the industry will already be done, i cant see CNN doing a follow up saying sorry folks we got it all wrong.

even so its so it will be sad if it turns out that it was a pulsed yag and a stupid operator ... what were they thinking

Where the hell do you get this NONSENSE !

each effect has to be calculated and timed. 800 mw is NOT safe for a static effect. YOU ARE FULL OF BULLSHIT!

Having been to many Grateful Dead shows, I can tell you that there are a lot of people walking around with their pupils fully dilated; so big you can see into their brains!

This is probably not so uncommon in any situation where you'd find loud music and lasers, open to the public.
