    Default Heatsinking a 5.6 can

    Hey you-all
    Which surfaces of a 5.6mm diode need to be in contact with the h.s. grease and aluminum housing? A, B, C, or all of the above?

    Surfaces A and B are the accepted standard....easiest to machine for. I would allow some .002/.004" for thermal expansion. With an interference fit you may crack the window in front of the diode....BTDT. Oh by the wayI manged to kill the 635nm diode. I guess I spiked it ....misshandling. It did make 158mW of 635 though. Divergence...well....floodlight. I did install a FAC lens....a lot better , but no beam of use in a projector.

    Oh geez .. ouch.. eh . i klled a 635 too. . felt kinda sick to my stomach :\
    for a day or so... eh..
    Well I dissected one of my dead Maxys this afternoon and put a 636 diode in it just for kix (just happened to be a 5.6 can that Chuck uses)_
    Cant get the lens close enough (the thread run-off isnt quite deep enough) - looks like a fun project tho.. will post pics soon ..

    I fixed the problem...
    Heres a 636 nm Maxy
    'course it'll take an anamorphic przm or 2...

    Question

    How big is that beam there man? Is it good enough for a projector?

    5mm x 1mm at the ap, 34mm x 4mm rectangle at 14 ft. /fast axis tamed to to 8.5mm with an anamorphic prizm pair out of one of Laser Ben's MG modules at the output lens. Not stellar, but a fun project .
    I guess I need a slightly higher power prizm pair (if they make 'em)..
