ok finally got things working by disabelling the firewall full stop.

    but question.

im currently connect through my wireless router to my laptop.

if i was out in the field doing a laser show i wouldnt be connected to a wireless router. can i still connect the iphone to the laptop?

Andy: There used to be an iPhone tethering app, but it got pulled down from the iTunes site. However Apple are planning to release their own tethering app soon, so it would be legit.

EDIT: Just re-read your post. I thought you meant to use the internet connection. Use VNC Lite (on iTunes app store) works dead well.

Jem: Are you still having problems with your XDA? I've got the exact same setup, and used the remote desktop for another app. Let me know if you want a hand to get it working.

I've also got the VNC software on my iPod touch

    yes:
Tight VNC installed on the PC
Mocha VNC on iPhone (search on iTunes store, two versions free and paid)

    Question

Can't you do this with any wifi enabled phone or device? An iPod Touch should work shouldn't it?
