    Back on topic PLEASE!!!

    "Stolen" from another forum:

Lighting, Shading, Shadows and Textures was also made available in a
laser show creation tool that, up until now has been known internally as
"Lasershow Designer 4D", but will soon be called "BEYOND Solid Modeling".

In fact you just stole the stolen...
I posted the short info on BEYOND over af LF.net and I also included the link where it came from.

WAV has so many advantages... you can compress it to MP3, you can stream it over the internet, you can even use your mp3-player to control your projector

Wave makes sense because the data going to the galvos is analog wave forms anyway.. ild files just store vector info, the software has to convert that info to a analog data anyway. Scanners run on analog voltage fluctuations not vector information.

well its six of 1 and half a dozen of the other.. either the software is gonna convert a vector file into a analog data, or the software is gonna optimize the analog data to your specific settings. But when you start with wave data, you have a ton more information to work with in the source file. I like the idea of the ild format, but i believe it should be something that is open and standardized.

nope, not an IP, but i think we I understand where James is coming from. And i agree with alot of what he has to say. he is not egotistical, he is just confident that he is right. And there is nothing worse that being confident that you are right and having someone who doesn't understand the issue at all tell you you are wrong.

Now i also agree that he is a fanatical eccentric nutjob, but he is a VERY SMART fanatical eccentric nutjob..

I know i don't fully understand the issue so im not about to tell anyone they are wrong. I will however state my opinion on the ethics involved. I a proponent of GPL, GNU, and other open licensing formats Q.E.D.

Unless, of course, he is the one telling the virtually the whole industry they are wrong, and presents his viewpoint as my way is THE only way, not just an alternative, and that everyone else is wrong. You really need to go back and read some of his mult-page tirade threads from start to finish!

You probably won't get many disagreements there!!

My apologies for continuing the diversion from the original thread intent -

Drlava's post was / is VERY cool, and I'm sure many of us would like to see how far it progresses, without all the "corporate vs. independent developer" or "my file format is better than your file format" unnecessary bullshit tossed in!!

yes i agree it is very cool..

What I (and i thnk James as well) hate is when DrLava decides to show something that is cool and he is working on and some pangoline rep steps in and turns it into this..

a better response by pangoline would have been:
"hey, thats prety cool. We have actually done some work in the 3D shading department, here are some links if you are interested"

so I will not take anybody's side here except DrLava's since without him i would not have my FlexMod's or my AudioDAC op amp board

(oh wait thats james's board design, guess im leaning that way)

I think most would agree that the exchange between Drlava and Pangolin (and for that matter, between most independent developers and Pangolin, if you search through past threads) has been both very cordial, and mutually supportive. Overall, that is generally the case throughout this forum, which is one of the reasons a lot of us stick around!

No doubt, the independent software and hardware developers are making a great contribution to the hobby, and are offering a great option for those that wish to go that route, just as Microsoft, Apple, and Linux derivatives offer many options for computer users. There's plenty of room for everyone, and certainly doesn't require that anyone involved has to continually proclaim (and not very tactfully at times) that their way is the only way, especially when an entire global industry stands behind and supports an established, proven, working set of technological standards! While options are great, reading the same rants over and over about how the industry is wrong (especially when so many of us feel fortunate to be quite happily involved with portions of that industry) is not!!

That last comment is absolutely NOT aimed at Drlava - as mentioned previously, many of us will be watching with great interest to see how his project progresses, and wish him the best of luck!
