I am considering just using straight cat5 for my projector instead of a DB25 connector. They are much easier to work with, and work better over long distances than >100m of ribbon cable

I'm also going for Ethercon (RJ45) connectors for ILDA-signals. Easy cabling and my controllers (QM2000.NET nice boxed) will have several Ethercon outputs

hmm. can you send me that pinout? if there is some systems that already uses RJ45 cables i should make my own compatible with it.

That's good work with the project.

But your sentance above made me chuckle. In your first post you say "f**k standards", then in the above post you say "i should make my own compatible with".

Not having a go at you, just a bit contradictory that's all.

ilda:s connector standard is some ancient from '80 or so, have you ever tried use these DB25 when rigging some stuff in trusses... or just plug XLR7, or XLR-chassis RJ45 connector in place... huge difference.

it's something like using XLR3 or RJ45 connectors for DMX512 when standard mentions only XLR5, nowadays XLR3 is common in lowend systems and there is lot adapters for XLR5 to RJ45 and it's pinout is almost "standard".

I perfectly understand what you are saying and like what you are doing.
I do what ever is needed to get the job done as easily and as quickly as possible and if that means using non-standard connections or other things then so be it.
It was just the contradiction in the two statements that made me chuckle. You know on one had sod the standards and then on the other I should try and make it compatible.

I also agree that trying to connect a DB-25 to a projector when it's all hooked up on a truss is quite a pain in the ass. I only use a short lead from the projector to the DMX SD DAC, so I can control the shows from my lighting desk via DMX.

Yes DMX512-A is a 5-pin XLR and every fixture I have has 3-pins, so I use all 3-pin XLR cables, proper 120ohm ones for DMX usage not XLR audio cables. My new DMX interfaces are 5-pin so I have to use 5-pin to 3-pin adaptors to use them.

Funny, I had such a problem finding a DB25 cable around here, I wound up doing cat5 and it works perfectly fine.

Granted there will be DB25 connectors on both the DAC & Projector along with the cat5 connectors when it is all said and done.

Nice to see I'm not the only one thinking this way haha

They're fine if you use the ones with thumbscrews- no screwdriver needed. Then you mount a cable retention spring clip near the socket so that a loop of cable can be rigidly retained. Problem solved.

Cat5 cable is much better especially for balanced ILDA signals, since it will have common mode rejection far in excess of that available for ribbon cable. (Interesting fact: printer cables are supposed to use twisted pairs.)

    Personally I run USB -> balun -> long cat5 -> balun -> USB -> DAC -> ILDA -> projector

Now if only I could figure a way to run dual-link DVI-D over cat5 for a couple hundred feet...

what would you be putting though the DVI cable? I know they make converter boxes for component video...run the RGB video signal though cat5, I'm sure it wont be long before the same thing is out for DVI.
