Pretty strong words there, Keperex... You've been a member for *how* long, exactly?
If Soforene (or anyone else) is getting under your skin, send him a PM. You might be surprised at what you learn.
But I'd say you lost any ability to complain about the tone of his posts when you publically posted the "Go F yourself" message a few messages back. People in glass houses and all that...
Adam
PS: Looks like Aaron beat me by a minute or two!![]()
FYI, i have not liked soforene for as long as i have been here..
he is what we call here in the states, a dick...
i have the ability to complain and the will, maybe you should take a good hard look at the post record of soforene... many of his comments are smartass wisecracks at the expense of someone else, they are not made in good fun, but rather in bad form.
i have not been here for a long time, but as someone that is a member of a silly number of online forums including this one, it does not take long for me to form an opinion about someone.
I will not hide that opinion or be passive aggressive.. I will put it out there for the world to see and form their own opinion about... I do not like wisecracking smartass assholes that feel the need to boost their fragile ego's by posting in forums and putting other peoples ideas down.. This may be a temporary fix to their low self esteem issues, but in the long run, they need therapy.
As for myself.. i could probably use therapy too.
I think im gonna try this tesseract thing in 3d at lunch..

Which is to say, not long. There is a lot of background that you missed. There is a reason behind at least some of the jokes. While I'm not commenting on the appropriateness of the two wrongs make a right theory, I do understand the root of the issue, for what it's worth. I'm thinking that maybe you don't.
Also, there is the cultural aspect to consider. The Brits are a lot more uninhibited (that is to say, earthy) with their humor than we are. That doesn't make them dicks, it makes them different. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between a thinly veiled insult and a locker-room joke told among buddies. (Karl, I'm looking at you now!)
What I mean by this is that at this point many of the comments that still sound recklessly offensive are, in fact, meant more in a chiding, "remember back then" sort of way. Not quite endearing, but close. From what I've read in this thread at least, that's where Soforene's comments were comming from. But it's easy to mistake that for a direct insult.
It's only really been at the express expense of someone else since September of this year, and as I said, there is a history involved that you probably were not around to witness. The rest is easily chalked up to the cultural difference.many of his comments are smartass wisecracks at the expense of someone else,
Having said that, I do agree that with regard to the nasty events of the past (you all know what I'm talking about), it's time to let bygones be bygones. I mean come on - I've managed to bury the hatchet, and arguably I had more at stake than Soforene did. (Can I get a group hug here?)
I'd like to think that this is more than just one of a silly number of online forums. I, too, have spent a significant portion of my adult life participating in on-line discussions of one form or another. But with one exception (an old Amiga BBS from the late 1980's), I've never come across a community quite like this one.as someone that is a member of a silly number of online forums including this one, it does not take long for me to form an opinion about someone.
In case you haven't noticed, PhotonLexicon is something rather special. And to the best of my knowledge, it has succeeded where no other laser forum has. (Despite the best efforts of Pangolin, ILDA and Michael Robers of LaserFX.com fame, not to mention the alt.lasers USNET newsgroup.)
Even so, it's a very narrow communications medium. Even with the smileys, it's easy to get the wrong impression. (Way too easy, unfortunately.) So don't be too quick to form lasting opinions of people before you meet them in person. I promise you that you'll think differently of them once you have met them. (My thoughts sure changed, on everyone from Bill Benner to Steve Roberts!)
You can't imagine the kinds of cool people we have here until you meet them face to face. Well, maybe you can, as you've already met Mark (Imagelight)... Just multiply that by a hundred or so and you've got the idea!Come to SELEM 2009 and you'll really see what I mean. (Actually, Mark said that he was going to kidnap you and drag you kicking and screaming to SELEM 2009 this summer if you didn't agree to go on your own!)
I agree. And if it were being done to prop up an otherwise fragile ego, I'd agree with you completely. In fact, I do sort of agree with you in that I think the payback has gone far enough. (It's a new year and all... C'mon, give it a chance!)I do not like wisecracking smartass assholes that feel the need to boost their fragile ego's by posting in forums and putting other peoples ideas down.
However, you jumped to conclusions without even asking Soforene for his side. (Whether you agree with it or not is of course another matter.) Furthermore, you probably missed the nastyness that started this all, for Soforene and several others. And like I said, in this thread at least, I believe he was trying to be funny more than anything.
Finally - and perhaps most importantly - regardless of anyone elses guilt or innocence, you lost all credibility by stooping to the same level with your reply. If you're going to claim the moral high ground, you need to keep your own anger in check. (A mistake that has tripped me up on more than one occaision.)
I think a lot of us could benefit from this.As for myself.. i could probably use therapy too.I know I could.
That's the spirit! Let us know how it goes.I think im gonna try this tesseract thing in 3d at lunch..

ok i really hate multi quotes... it always makes the post seem so pretentious, when i know your not being pretentious...
I have an idea for the tesseract but its gonna tak a bit to make it work..

Calling Mr Buffo.
Please report to The Middle East.
Clean up in Aisle Gaza Strip.
I'm here (like everyone else) for the love of lasers.
I know that keeperx and I exchanged words before Krimbo but it's only t'internet and not real.
I moved on.
My first post in this thread was No. 23 where I piped up because the general concensus was that a laser tesseract had not been done.
Having given the details, the very next post from keeperx was that it hadn't been done.
Talk about denial !
Then Tinkerbell wades into the attack with accusations that I hadn't done it (never said I did, in fact I even credited Jay Heck in the post) and a non too friendly "Get Stuffed".
Hey ho.......
Then a nasty message from keeperx to spice things up (apparently for only adding to the thread in a none smart ass way).
Perhaps there's more to the therapy comment, after all, many a true words spoken in jest.
Anyhoo, us Brits don't go in for that sort of thing.
I'd call you a Wanker then go down the pub cus life's too short to get your knickers in a twist (or panties in a bunch as you yanks say) about comments on a public forum.
Not everyone likes me (incredible but true!) but my first post on this interesting thread was just adding info to the forum and not feeding my fragile delicate ego (mercy me, I'm blushing as I type this !).
As Mother Theresa McBuffo commented, it's sometimes difficult to understand the nuances of posts on a forum despite copious amounts of smilies.
However, if you can't get your point acoss in a witty way without reverting to plain ole nastiness then it kinda reflects back on the poster ( I was going to use the "moral high ground" phrase but someone beat me to it).
Blimey !
War and Peace.
In summary:
I didn't create a laser tesseract but someone did in 1997.
I'm off to get a nubile young virgin to massage my tired fingers and egg shell-like ego.![]()
Really? Hmmm. Interesting. I never thought about it that way. I always use multi-quotes because it keeps me on track with the discussion. But I can see how it could be misconstrued as being pretentious. (That might explain a few discussions gone bad in the past, at least on my part!)
Glad to know that you realized I wasn't doing it intentionally to bug you though.
Not a chance... They'd hang me from a lamp post and then shoot me. There's enough hatred there (on *both* sides) to last another thousand years at least. (Sigh...)
Ack! Mother Theresa? OK - I'm going to get you back for that one, just as soon as I figure out a witty retort, that is!As Mother Theresa McBuffo commented, it's sometimes difficult to understand the nuances of posts on a forum despite copious amounts of smilies.
Hmmm... Do they have lots of finger-massaging nubile young virgins in the UK? I didn't know that! (I tell ya, the things you can learn on the Internet!)I'm off to get a nubile young virgin to massage my tired fingers and egg shell-like ego.![]()
