    Default Spectra Physics 185

    Well... I've had this laser for a while now and never tried to run it... but I did get all the necessary parts to get it going.

    What I wanted to know is if someone is familiar with this little bad boy... I was told it did more than 180mW, no mention on current. I got the power supply and was told it works, but likes to hang on idle. It also apparently climbs very slowly to set power... perhaps never reaching it.

    Again, I don't know how to power this thing. I can't find a suitable set of info on these... and SP was helpful in providing me with the manual in electronic version.

    I can make the manual available if anyone needs it...

    Anyone familiar with powering/connecting these things to a household in USA? I know it needs 230V or so, but I don't know much about power to even try to hook this thing up... will it even work on the dryer/stove plug?

    Thanx;
    DDL

    I'm fairly sure the psu you most likely have is 230v @ 15A. You should have no problems running it off of a dryer outlet which is usually rated for 30A. Or you could use a "range" outlet which is usually 50A but the plug is different and generally a tiny bit more expensive to buy than a dryer plug.

    Any idea which pins on the PSU go to which pins on the plug?

    There should be three flat pins (talking about the receptacle on the PSU), the one in the 'center' which should be a bit longer than the other two, will be your neutral (which is the top pin on the dryer outlet, the one that isn't a flat prong, but more of an L shape (you should probably take a picture of your dryer outlet just to make sure it's the same as mine)). The other two are hot.

    Pictures below...

    My dryer outlet is, as you describe, has a 30A fuse. The plug itself is 2 slanted flat prongs, and one L-shaped prong.

    Dryer plug diagram (couldn't get a clear picture... it's all reflective black and you can't clearly see the openings):
