Not true. Just get a VFD (variable frequency drive) and you can run it on single phase and have variable speed with the twist of a pot. Reverse is just a toggle switch away
end quote.

when they refitted the elevators at my old job, we grabbed a elevator VFD off the loading dock and refitted my friend's bridgeport , and got rid of the 5 horse phase converter, he got beautiful variable speed with a 10 turn pot, instant reverse and much smoother torque under load. Well worth the effort. Oh, and its quiet.

I don't have a link to the adjustment screws. They are on McMaster-Carr. Go to fasteners->set screws and the look around for 1/4-80tpi ones with ball bearings on the tips. They are pricey but they make adjustment smooth like butter. I have 3 each to my dichro mounts and it made a huge difference compared to the 40tpi set screws from the hardware store. The ball bearings on the end make a bigger difference than the tpi. I ended up paying about $35 in materials for my dichro mounts. About $30 for the screws and about $5 for the aluminum and other parts. lol. Probably would have been worth it to have bought ready made ones.
Thorlabs sells the 1/4-80 screws and mounting bosses and taps cheap.

http://www.thorlabs.com/newgrouppage...=1189&pn=71529 -> tap
http://www.thorlabs.com/NewGroupPage...tGroup_ID=1207 -> screws and all sorts of fun stuff

For fun I looked up the price $27... for the tap, I didn't look up the screws. I may end up buying a couple soon! Thanks Steve!

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

those are some nice parts but like you say it may be cheaper to just buy mounts already made.

Dang the bushings are $8.40ea and the screws are $7.60ea so for just x y if you use a ball bearing for the piviot that is $32.00 before you add the alluminum, the machining time, springs, anodizing, any set screws and any other hardware or special tools to insert bushings...Let see...this mount would cost $237,474.00!

Looks good, I really could have done with this a few months back!

I havent read all the posts above so I don't know if this is already said but the height is way to high for my scanners, perhaps you could make one that has an adjustable height?

Yes I know...this is a real tough one.

According to the thread started by chad http://www.photonlexicon.com/forums/...ht=beam+height

Beam heights can be anywhere between 20 mm and 3.5" I have been in this long enough to know that there is no standard. May be ILDA could offer accreditation certificate points if some one would use an ILDA projector with a standard beam height as set forth by the ILDA projector standard beam height committee. (just kidding of course, i'm kind of a smart@$$ that way)

BTW- I have a very good plan on how to fix this problem, I have to fire the german machinist and find another one to fix this problem.

Well, while waiting on a Client to send some info for a Show Contract, I knocked this together for ya in P-Shop... And of course, I JUST realized, that this is WAY over-done (for such a little module; I mean, this is not a 400lb. 500W KTP death-ray that needs support! )

...You could simply use the holes I 'put-in' for the 'proposed' clamping screw-locations (both sides of the diode, in the comp) AS the holes for the 'posts' to slide-thru, and then, the 4-corners would still be for 'clamping' screws, as-in your original design, which is clearly better (more 'evenly clamped'...)

And, of course, the idea would use nice, 'beefy' posts that JUST barely clear the 'pass-thru' holes, NOT like I show here, all 'loosey-
goosey' (this is after-all, just a 'quickie comp' to show the idea...)

Anyhoo, fairly simple, and should-not add 'exponentially' to the cost... And yes, I realize this 'kills' any pan / tilt / rotate ideas...
just a quick doodle for a simple height-adjustable version, sent in peace... PS - for 'extreme' height-versions, you can simply offer 'variable-height post kits', ie: 3", 4", 5" etc, to-beam-center, etc...
