Oh, yeah it's probably about the same. I hadn't seen his post, just wanted to make sure you knew about the cheaper stuff

Yeah as soon as I saw that stuff I ordered it up, much cheaper than digikey.

What do you guys think of this: http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/07/h...soldering-iron

OOOH! That's cool! (Actually hot...) I'm gonna have to try that. I have a few of those RS desolidering irons around the lab.
    Great Idea!
    Thanks!

put the air pump in a plastic box, thus reversing it, now you have through hole desolder as well as a heat gun :-) I bet car vacuum line tubing from autozone will take the heat.

Well... I tried it and am very disappointed. I used the "Exact" same stuff they had in the build tutorial. Just so happens I had all that stuff. I tried adjusting the size of the nozzle and the amount of solider wick. It does a great job at melting hot glue and shrinking tubing but doesn't even come close to melting solider. You may have better luck but I think it's bogus.

For stuff that i design, I usually try not to go smaller than 1206

Did that. I even let it heat up for 20 minutes and then flipped on the air only when I was over the surface mount cap. Still didn't work. I'll try fiddling with a better solider wick placement and try again tonight.
