The alloy of aluminium I've used welds very poorly, but is the best for machining. I could have chosen otherwise, but I prefer milling and such to welding

One question: What's with all the short cylinders supporting the middle plate? Surely you don't need that many supports... Doesn't that cut into the usable space for the underside? (Thought that space was going to be used for electronics?)

Yep, I think I've made 2 more extra than needed. I may only end up with 10
The plan is to mount the posts every 100mm (starting and ending 50mm from the triangular plates). I chose the numbers and diameter for rigidity.

I've attached a rough drawn photo of where the optics path will be. The lower deck is for laser heads and optics. The upper deck is for electronics, PSU's and anything else. The lower deck will be sealed, and the upper deck will have a fan on either end to create a 'wind tunnel' flow. All PCB's will be mounted vertically and parallel to the long edge in the middle. This way air can flow right through the case and cool all the bits and bobs.

for instance im a big Fan of TAG HEUER watches .... they have totaly reinvented the traditional watch movement ... just thrown away 100s of years of proven design

but its cool see here ....

coming back to you case ..... the only practical issue i see is usable space .... as when the sides are on it will limit the amount of footprint that you can use .... every thing will have to mounted close to the centreline of the top plate

    all the best ... Karl
    That watch is awesome!
It's a shame it's only a concept model, I really would like to get hold of one of those!

I've planned out most of the layout on several sheets of A3 paper stitched together, and should be ok. I even had an excel spreadsheet re-calculate all the dimensions if I changed one tiny variable.

I know by going the triangular way, I loose out on a shed load useable volume bulk, but I hope I've provisioned enough useable space to fit all that's needed (and more!) inside.

Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions - much appreciated.

I know this thread is old; but this post wasn't worth a new thread...

After changing 101 things about my projector, I decided to rebuild it after getting th'ally anodised.

(It's changed considerably since the pics were taken some 2 days ago )
And this was taken before it blew up (twice! )

The afternoon was going slow, so I slowed it down even more by taking some photos...
Didn't put the sides on in the photos though...

what about a real pink-floyd effect with a pink floyd prism simulation, like a white beam directed to the left and three coloured beams to the right, coming out of the "prism" faces? (it would only be an output window on each side)

    ^^^^^ Cool idea ^^^^^

and you could make it make a cash register sound every time you switch it on (just like the one I hear in my head every time I look at my projectors).

    Cha-ching!

That looks like a nice case! What driver are you using with your dual-red setup?

I don't believe you have any sides for The Toblerone Projector.
I have always seen it "nekkid".

Oh, it's sides-a-plenty round these parts now

But *cough* bit of a cock up with the new (3rd!) power supply means it won't actually fit in *cough* thus the side will av ta stay off.
So it'll be freezin' its kanckers off all weekend a la Surfleet.
However, just fer you I'll bring 'em, perhaps put one on ta make it look half decent.

Is a Kancker similar to a Knacker?

we dont neeed no educashun !!

I suspect that the temperature will be a talking point throughout the weekend.
But us Brits love talking about the weather so it's a win-win situation.
Well, apart from the poor sods who are sleeping in the hall.

Any Bumming going on this year Rob?

    Nicely done,

Is the optics area also air tight?
