As such and based on the fact that this guy is a relatively new member on our forum and the majority of his posts are aimed at self promotion, I'm tending to be a bit "suss" about his motives for joining the PL.

I could be wrong and he may grow to be a valued member but at the moment it's all moving very fast in the "Me Me Me" department.
with all due respect - in my opinion, if he has something of value to sell he is contributing to the community by his efforts to stock and sell something. Car Sales Tactics are a bit testing but they are his tactics, If one chooses not to support his tactics, his tactics might change, let he market decide. Also, Just because he may or may not be able to answer peoples questions on a topic does not mean that he is not a significant contribution.

Now in reference to Adams statement - valid points and need to be addressed to avoid the illusion of being shadey That IS MY job!

where i think people may be taken aback with this "raffle" is that at $5 a ticket for an approx. $200 laser, you need to sell 40 tickets. what if 60 tickets are sold? what if 100 tickets are sold? who gets the "above and beyond" profits? will *YOU* be profiting from this? will the profit $ be donated back to PL? will the $ be used to buy beer? will the $ be used to sponsor children in ethiopia? when things like this are brought up here, MANY MANY questions are always asked.

this forum is VERY VERY respected by its members and we highly value the dignity and responsible business practices of its members and/or sellers.

maybe provide a more detailed map of what money will be used for what. if you plan on using this as a profit gimmick, that is fine...just make sure any and all possible contestants are aware of this.

is this open to JUST PL members? general public?

    -Marc
Good questions, I'm glad your asking.
    Lets see...
Proceeds will help pay for both sites www.LaserEnthusiast.com and www.LaserSurplusParts.com. Such as Server Space, Software, Domain Names. You get the idea.
Above and beyond that, the extra money will be used in the next Raffle for Bigger and Multiple prizes and winners.

I don't think hiding who I am and where I'm from would be a good sign of honesty.

A Scheme?? Thats a pretty raw assumption I don't have ANY history of ANY wrong doing to my Forum Members or my Store.
In fact I clearly have pointed out that the last Raffle went as planned and no complaints what so ever from anyone.

ME ME ME, Well I do run a BUSINESS and advertising is part of it.
Is this thread the incorrect place to post?

Are all the other business's here and on other forums frowned upon for having a username that is their business? Not that I have EVER seen.

If advertising a business that is clearly a HUGE benefit for the Laser Enthusiast and built with those intentions, is not wanted or needed. I will move along quietly.
However there are lots of people who are enjoying the benefits of buying sleds at 1 low price and not having to wait for them or deal with iffy Group Buys that sometime never happen.

I am giving people a CHOICE, and throwing in a Custom Built BluRay that is being built with some of the next generation products from all over, that are not yet available to anyone just yet.

Now that i posted that above. here is what I actually think.

if it dosnt have lights, labels, interlocks & a keyswitch it is an illegal item, which some one who dosnt know the proper use of the item, and points it at an airplane...WE ALL LOOSE THE RAFFLE!

This raffle is VERY DANGEROUS IN MY OPINION!

The next question is, "Which Adam was Pat referring to?"

But yeah, no offense taken - at least not on the part of THIS Adam!

    Steve;

The issue with your user name being your business isn't really a problem until it becomes your business's WEB ADDRESS. That's where people usually draw the line. There's certainly nothing wrong with using your business name in your user name. But in you case, by making it equal to the web address, it's almost as if every post of yours is a little bit of spam for your site. I think it would have been more appropriate to put that in your sig block. (But I see that it has been taken care of now..)

I know, the difference between the two is very subtle. Please try to understand that this forum is not against people selling things. But the underlying philosophy of this place is for people to help others. You'll find that other companies are represented here - companies that do business in the laser industry - but they *all* keep a low profile and try to help out in the forums when they can. That builds goodwill for the company *and* helps make the forums a better place for everyone.

I think a lot of the resistance to this (and other) threads is that your early contributions have all been high profile *and* sales-related. We have a strong distrust of anyone that looks like they might be using the forum strictly for spamming. Not saying that you are doing that (you *did* post in the correct area, after all), but your raffle - coming so soon after you joined and having unlimited ticket sales - is certainly not the sort of thing that would be expected from a new user with a mind for contributing to the forums. Rather, it sounds more like a marketing gimmick, and we usually equate gimmicks with scams. Again, not accusing you of any wrong-doing, just pointing out how it appears on this side of the computer screen.

Bottom line: It's a bit unseemly to join a forum and then start advertising for a raffle that will help support a different forum. Just my $.02...

    Adam

I like the fact of seeing a few of his products in someone's hands here..to reveal the truth. If his products test good and deliver what is advertised ,I have no problem. I dont have anything from him , but may consider a couple of diodes. I do think a raffle should have some proceeds go into the forums that it is advertised on....maybe get someone else to handle the funds that would be nonbiased as to the monetary outcome pending instructions.

now I am no legal nanny here but does anyone want to address the issue of a "company" basically "giving away" or "endorsing" the "distribution" of an "illegal laser product"? It would not be an issue with me with the exception that some one who does not know laser safety being "the winner" and then doing something stupid

The Admin here was kind enough to change my user name, so that issue is resolved.

Secondly the Raffle is limited to LEC members only, everyone is still more than welcome to participate, however ANY questions, comments should be addressed there only.

I have obviously inadvertently created a bit of hysteria here with my posts, so lets start over...

Hello, my name is Steve, I'm known in the laser communities as High Octane.
I have been in most laser forums for several years now and I have a ton of lasers and flashlights. From pointers, modules, argon and NeHE. Plus the added equipment to test build and repair them.

I've mainly been in the car business and have worked my way up from a porter to a manager. Spent some time as an Iron Worker as well.
With the auto industry as iffy as it is due to the economy, I moved to UPS as a fleet technician. The insurance is unbeatable and the people I work with are some of the nicest people I have ever worked with besides the Iron Workers a local 396.

My hobbies include cars, computers, lasers and websites. never formally trained at any of them, I have spent much of my free time teaching myself.

My typical day is waking up, logging on to my websites, checking PM's and Emails, packing orders, searching the web for deals to pass on in the store, then its off to work were I will spend anywhere from 8 to 12 hours a day.
when I get home its back on the computer updating my sites scripts and software, adding more informitive posts and answering emails and PM's, then its off to bed for a few hours only to start the cycle again.

Anyways thats alitte about me, Thanks for allowing me here and I hope to help alot of people make there laser dreams a reality.
