Call that a laser? Now this is a laser!

I was watching a programme on Nuclear Fusion tonight on TV and they showed a facility some of you in the US may have heard of:

    - The National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Laboratory

Interesting bit for me was they're trying to achieve nuclear fusion using a laser.

Not just any laser but this one:

192 beams producing 500 Million Million WATTS of laser power

Do you reckon they'd let us in with a smoke machine?

I am not sure you would need the smoke machine... Just throw up a cup of your fog juice, or water.... But concrete safety glasses may still be required... Darn cameras get to have all the fun!

Laser (the acronym derived from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emissions of Radiation) is a spectacular manifestation of this process. It is a source which emits a kind of light of unrivaled purity and intensity not found in any of the previously known sources of radiation. - Lasers & Non-Linear Optics, B.B. Laud.

Ahhh, but for how many femtoseconds?

Now, if it was CW that would be different

I went for a tour at the NIF facility last year. We didn't get to see anything interesting for say, but the scale of the place was amazing.

And the greatest part is that the laser makes green light for a small portion of the beam path.
