I've seen them sell for $65 to $75 on E-bay...
Hmm right, well I was looking at those before. Are they really any that good? Compared to normal strobes they do look like they wouldn't give the same effect.

Main reason I am after one is for the DMX control and to replace the mini strobe light I got from maplin a few years back that just has speed control.

ramsey electronics makes a led strobe kit, I'd give it a 3.75 on a 1-5 scale. If you'd shorten the on pulse duration, its a decent kit.

fast strobes capable of time fountain effects don't show up much as kits these days, and I used to buy strobes at where I worked like dracula drinks virgins. We had one on every experiment station.

For a small fountain, I'd search for a shimpo xenon strobe and you'd be very happy. Nice microprocessor controlled, have speed readouts and long life lamps, very fast, and usually sold well below costs. Plus is it a useful lab tool and has external sync. It ramps its power down as speed goes up to protect the lamp, and thats rare these days. The 200 uS or less flash makes a nice "Freeze"

I like them, but one by itself probably isn't going to give the same intensity as a single similar-size zenon strobe unit. Can't vouch for comparison with new high-power LED-type strobes, since I've never had the chance to tinker with any...

Do you want single colour or RGB strobe?

Well if it's a LED one you want then you could try the Chauvet LED Techno Strobe, this is an all white one, quite big though as 192 LEDs on a panel, quite bright localised but not an audience blinder. They do a colour version and an ultravilolet version. It's about £120.

For a real bulb strobe then the Martin Atomic 3000 DMX is hard to beat, but it's about £400.
